Shelby Samples

The Shelby samplers are used to collect undisturbed samples according to the standards established in the Brazilian NBR 9820 – ABNT Standard Practice and the American ASTM D1587 – 08 Standard Practice for Thin-Walled Tube Sampling of Soils for Geotechnical Purposes.

This technique uses hollow stem augers to perform mechanized borings. The sampler is then advanced into the soil by a hydraulic penetrometer. This system makes it possible to obtain high quality samples at depths of up to 25 meters.

The steel tubes are then used as containers, assuring that the samples are transported to laboratory with minimal disturbance.

Stationary Piston Sampler

The Stationary Piston samplers are used to gather soil samples for laboratory or field testing and analysis for geologic investigations, soil chemical composition studies, and water quality investigations. The sampler can be used when attempts to recover unstable soils with “standard” Shelby samplers.

This technique is regulated by ASTM- D6519Standard Practice for Sampling of Soil Using the Hidraulically operated Stationary Piston Sampler.
